Cleveland County is a county located in the U.S. state of North Carolina. As of 2000, the population was 96,287. Its county seat is Shelby.
The county was formed in 1841. It was named for Benjamin Cleveland, a colonel in the American Revolutionary War, who took part in the Battle of King's Mountain.
